Checklist for students:

  • Complete LAVC CalWORKs Intake Forms: 
  • Student Educational Plan - For CalWORKs students to be eligible for PRIORITY REGISTRATION, a Student Educational Plan must be completed. Schedule an appointment with a Counselor to develop your educational plan!
  • Verification of Eligibility - Provide the CalWORKs office with a "Verification of Benefits" or a "Notice of Action" letter indicating your eligibility for cash aid benefits dated at least four weeks within the start date of courses. You may also print your "Verification of Benefits" by accessing LA DPSS self-service website Your Benefits NOW (YBN). http://dpssbenefits.lacounty.gov/ybn/Index.html.   • Process CalWORKs Materials Request form, for additional funds required for your courses:  Attach all necessary documents such as "verification of benefits" and course syllabus. Submit this worksheet to our office or email to CalWORKs@smcun.com, allow 4-6 business days for processing. Visit www.lavcbookstore.com to find the required textbooks for your courses.
  • Sign and indicate your student ID # on all forms. Monthly Activity Report (GN6365), Progress Report (GN6070), and Training Verification (GN6006, 6005A, STA-20). Please allow at least 4 to 6 business days for processing.

  • Attend CalWORKs informational workshops. Students must attend at least two workshops within the semester to be eligible to apply for CalWORKs work-study. Workshops are conducted virtually via Zoom and in person. Email calworks@smcun.com to RSVP for any of the workshops. 
  • Apply for CalWORKs Work-study. CalWORKs Work Study program is designed for CalWORKs students to gain knowledge of work experience and training while taking courses. Income earned through CalWORKs work-study is not calculated against cash aid benefits and eligibility, although CalFresh may be effected. Positions assigned can be on or off campus. The annual application period is from July to August.

You must adhere to the following criteria to apply:

  • Actively receiving cash aid for yourself, spouse (if applicable), and child(ren).
  • Be in good standing with DPSS CalWORKs/GAIN Program.
  • Completed at least one academic semester at LAVC with a minimum GPA of 2.5 or higher.
  • Must attend at least two workshops within the semester to be eligible to apply.
  • Have a Student Educational Plan (developed with Academic Counselor) on file with CalWORKs.
  • Enrolled in at least 6 qualifying units of classes towards your Student Educational Plan (SEP) each semester.
  • Successful completion of English 101.
  • Have strong computer, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Have strong communication and organizational skills.

ONLINE LIBRARY SERVICES AND RESOURCES

The LAVC Library is now providing online research assistance and online access to a great variety of research materials including ebooks, articles, movies, tutorials, and more.
